Henry's First Marriage Henry
Wesnofske Sr first married Mary Wesnofske, the widow of his older
brother
(William) Theodore on February 27, 1911 according to Nassau County
marriage records. Mary was, prior to marrying Theodore Wesnofske,
a Zulkofske. The Zulkofske's were an agricultural family and even
today Zulkofske descendants operate a cider mill in Jericho.
Together, Theodore and Mary had one child Elizabeth. Theodore died a couple of years after. Shortly after marrying younger brother Henry, Mary died in Raybrook, NY, a village in upstate Adirondack country located between Lake Placid and Saranac Lake in March 1912. She died at the very early age of 25 leaving Henry a widower after one year of marriage. The child Elizabeth was sent to live with Mary's parents Peter Zulkofske. According to census data, Elizabeth later married a Welber at some point but wound up taking care of her Zulkofske grandparents in their old age without an apparent household or child of her own. The clipping is from the May 12, 1912 issue of the Nassau County Record. |
Ray Brook was the site of the NY State Hospital for Incipient Pulmonary Tubercusis. Many newspapers, reflecting a stigma on the disease at the time, referred to people visiting 'Raybrook' when in fact they were patients. By 1915, New York State had passed mandatory incarceration laws for tuberculosis patients. In 1912, Ray Brook hospital was regarded as a model for new established County tuberculosis treatment institutions. It is likely that Mary was there in March as a patient rather than vacationer. |
