Wife Mary was murdered in August 1906 while in the midst of baking blackberry pies in her kitchen.  The murder remained unsolved although suspicion was first cast on a coachman from the estate of a wealthy neighboring lawyer of NYC and then on three strangers passing though the very rural area.  The house was found ransacked and  $1000 was said to have been taken from a closet in the the house

The Manelski couple had been renting a farm on East Williston Ave that became the property in 1913 for the site of the new Wheatley Hills Golf Club.
